How does coaching work?

Below is the acrostic GROW. It is one of the many models used in coaching.

  • Goals - The coach will help the client determine what their goals are.
  • Reality - The coach will help the client understand where they are at present in their personal life and career.
  • Options - The coach will help the client realize the options they need to consider for reaching their goals.
  • Willing - The coach will help the client determine what he or she is willing to do to employ the desired options for meeting their goals.

Coaching appointments between the coach and client are made to determine objectives, discuss goals, and report on progression. In addition, the pair will discuss a set of action steps to take for the following session.

Most coaches work with their clients by telephone and email, eliminating geographic barriers. Sessions between coaches and clients are generally scheduled bi-monthly (2 to 3 times a month) for 45 minutes to one hour per session.
